Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates 233,000 new cases of prostate cancer in 2014. The risk for prostate cancer increases significantly in white men over the age of 50 and in black men over the age of 40. The average age for diagnosis is approximately 66 years old. Treatment options for Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer
Therapeutic Radiation Oncology offers state-of-the-art treatment for prostate cancer including external beam radiation therapy and radioactive seed implantation. External beam treatment is daily treatment delivered by a machine known as a linear accelerator. Treatment is given Monday through Friday for approximately eight weeks. In contrast, radioactive seed implantation is an outpatient operative procedure in which small radioactive sources or “seeds” are placed directly into the prostate gland in order to deliver a high dose of radiation to kill cancer.
